Capsule shells typically consist of two parts: the shell and the cap. The main materials used for capsule shells include:

Plant-based raw materials: Such as cellulose and gelatin. Cellulose, extracted from lignin, is used to manufacture vegan capsules.

Animal-based raw materials: Such as gelatin and fish glue. Gelatin is extracted from animal bones, skin, and other tissues, while fish glue comes from fish scales and swim bladders. These materials are commonly used to manufacture gelatin capsules.

Chemically synthesized or semi-synthetic materials: Such as glyceryl stearate and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). These materials are typically used to manufacture capsule shells with better heat-sealing properties.
