Capsule shells made from natural materials exhibit good biodegradability and biocompatibility, readily decomposing in the intestines without posing a health hazard. However, these shells have poor acid and alkali resistance and heat resistance, making them unsuitable for high-temperature, high-humidity, and acidic/alkaline environments.

Capsule shells made from chemically synthesized or semi-synthetic materials possess good acid and alkali resistance, high-temperature resistance, high-humidity resistance, and heat-sealing properties, enabling their use in a wider range of applications. However, the biocompatibility and biodegradability of these materials have not been fully verified.
