Enteric-coated capsules are generally recommended to be taken before meals. Enteric-coated capsules are oral medications where the capsule encapsulates the drug. The capsule does not dissolve in the stomach; instead, it is propelled into the small intestine by gastric motility.
In the small intestine, intestinal fluid dissolves the capsule, releasing the drug. This allows for complete absorption and maximizes the drug's effectiveness. If enteric-coated capsules are taken after meals, the larger stomach contents can slow their passage into the intestines. Over time, this may cause the capsule to dissolve in the stomach, affecting drug absorption.
